  • Context

The project area is at the intersection of two highways and at the same time in an area where transportation networks intersect with the metrobus line, Kadıköy metro and even the additional metro line to be built in the future. However, due to the significant impact of the Fikirtepe transformation and the increasing construction in recent years around the E5 highway, it is a very dense, highly built and poorly planned region of the city. These situations; It causes various problems such as lack of green areas, air, noise and light pollution, scale problems, excessive mobility and traffic, and thus creates a highly chaotic and unqualified context for human life.

  • Idea

What kind of a reaction can be given and what kind of a manifesto can be put forward against the extreme urbanization and urban crime attitudes that are becoming wild in all this contextual chaos? How can this almost drowned part of the city breathe? By keeping the place’s recreation and green space identity, which is about to disappear in the urban memory, alive, on a more human scale, respectful to nature and the environment, with qualified green areas, rich and diverse public spaces, offering a wide range of experiences with different types of space setups, and thus providing access to culture, art, and How can spaces that provide rich opportunities for social interaction be created? With this stance, how can a symbolic vision and impact be put forward for urbanization? How can a focal point be created that appeals to different people on a neighborhood scale, metropolitan scale and even on an international scale, eliminating the hierarchical distinctions between producers and consumers and bringing all these groups together in an egalitarian environment? In addition to these, the main starting points of the design are how a flexible and sustainable culture and art center can be created that will allow alternative movements that arise with the transformations brought by time, as well as mainstream art productions.

  • Design

An efficient and functional halls and foyer base were designed, offering rich and diverse niche spaces that are placed there by carving the topography in a way that preserves the existing topography and vegetation identity of the area as much as possible and gradually integrate with the landscape by combining with the upper level of the area, with fragmented boundaries but integrated inside and thus efficient and functional. Thus, the basic and very large functions were melted into the floors exposed due to the slope, thus preventing the building from becoming gigantic. The foyer, which receives light from the exposed places and the skylights above, becomes a meeting point by creating an axis between the citizens coming from the main square and the residents coming from the neighborhood square.

The public setting in the multi-purpose squares and green areas created on the highway side and the squares and green areas created on the neighborhood side was combined with the upper squares and green areas created on the plinth with pedestrian axes with stairs, and the entire topography integrated with the plinth surroundings, top and plinth was created to create various public spaces integrated with open green areas.

A mass focal effect was created by placing the workshops, libraries, exhibitions, digital art laboratories and commercial masses on this base, gradually rising, expanding and becoming denser from the periphery of the area to its focus. Thus, a balanced and healthy relationship was tried to be achieved between the focal effect and the human scale.

By supporting open, semi-open and closed spaces, various spaces such as squares, passages, courtyards, streets, arcades, terraces, amphitheatres, which serve various functions among these masses, create various public interaction spaces that allow different experiences, providing rich opportunities for culture, art and social interaction. is intended to provide.

The existing and strengthened green texture at the periphery of the area was infiltrated between the masses and hard grounds towards the center, thus strengthening the natural and green area identities of these public spaces. Roofs also provide a complementary effect to the green area identity for areas that provide high elevation views, which constitute the majority of the surrounding areas, with the choice of green roofs.

Commercial units; It is positioned to support open, semi-open and closed public spaces in these areas and ensure functional continuity by spreading to different levels around the main square, neighborhood square and upper square.
