ARIZONA HOUSE

Located within the high desert ecosystem of Arizona, Arizona House presents a respectful architectural stance that blends modern design principles with the local context. The primary motivation is to create a fragmented mass composition and a refined material palette that harmonizes with the region’s iconic red rock formations rather than competing with them.

The project’s layout strategy transforms the 17-foot elevation difference into a spatial advantage. The terraced structure created with retaining walls minimizes intervention on the land, allowing the house to be organized on a single primary level. Orientation decisions based on climatic data prevent overheating by minimizing east and west openings, while expansive glass facades on the southern elevation optimize scenic views. The cross-ventilation strategy established along the north-south axis enhances interior comfort through passive climatization.

The architectural language follows the silhouette of the topography through hipped roof forms and strong horizontal lines. Positioning the garage at the lower elevation while keeping the main living areas on the expansive upper level creates a clear distinction between privacy and publicness. Large terraces and glass facades blur the boundaries between interior and exterior, bringing Arizona’s breathtaking landscape into the heart of the home. Through its rational relationship with mass, slope, and the environment, Arizona House offers a sustainable and aesthetically sophisticated vision of contemporary desert architecture.
